RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team dropped Friday's Atlantic 10 contest at Richmond, 4-0.
The Rams won the doubles point and then won three straight singles contests to claim the victory. Despite the setback, there are positives to take from the match heading into the final stretch of the 2017-18 season.
"The guys battled hard," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We came out and competed well across the board, but VCU was too tough for us today. We definitely saw some areas we can continue to improve these last few weeks before the A-10 Tournament, but we are trending in the right direction and I believe we can compete with any team in the A-10 this year. We're going to get back to work so we can prepare for GW on Sunday."
In doubles action, VCU claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, Mason's dynamic duo of freshman
Carter Bradford and senior
Giuliano Buzoianu were knotted up at 3-3 with the VCU pair of Zgraggen and Rivero Cresp, but the match was left unfinished before a winner could be determined.
In singles, Buzoianu also played well and held a 6-4 advantage in the first set at No. 6. The match was tied at 1-1 in the second, before it was called at the end of the day.
At No. 5 singles, senior
Pally Ray fell in a narrow 7-6 first set, but that competitive match also remained unfinished as the contest concluded.
The Patriots will have another shot at an A-10 win when Mason hosts the Colonials in the Revolutionary Rivalry on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Mason Tennis Courts.
