Patriots Begin Three-Game Series Against Georgetown Friday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team begins a three-game series against Georgetown on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.

Mason (14-17, 6-3 A-10) dropped a midweek contest against James Madison on Wednesday, with the Dukes earning a 2-1 win at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va. 

In his third start of the season, Mason freshman James Price didn't allow a hit and struck out four batters over a season-high five innings.  Graduate student Frank Sturek went 2-for-5, while sophomore John Callahan drove in the lone run of the game for the Patriots.

Mason has a team batting average of .256 through 31 games.  Sophomore Logan Driscoll is hitting .392 (47-for-120) and leads the Atlantic 10 in hits (47).  He is tied for third in the A-10 in RBI (29) and is tied for 11th in the conference in runs scored (23). 

Senior Tyler Nelin is batting .338 (22-for-65) and is fifth on the team in his (22).  Senior Trevor Kelly is batting .298 (37-for-124) and is tied for ninth in the A-10 in runs scored (24) and is 13th in the conference in RBI (23). 

On the mound, junior Zach Mort has a 3-1 record with a 1.73 ERA and is tied for the team lead in starts (8).  He leads the Atlantic 10 in strikeouts (71) and innings pitched (57.1) and ranks fourth in ERA (1.71)

Senior Ryan Ricci (3-1, 2.11) ranks third in the Atlantic 10 in appearances (16). 

The Patriots have a record of 33-16 in the all-time series against the Hoyas.

Last season, Georgetown took two of three games from Mason April 1-2, 2017 in a series held at Spuhler Field.  The two teams split a doubleheader, with the Patriots winning game one 11-1 and the Hoyas posting a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.  Georgetown won the series finale by the final score of 4-2.

SCOUTING REPORT

Georgetown has an overall record of 10-20, including a mark of 2-1 against BIG EAST opponents.  The Hoyas are 6-3 at home, 2-10 on the road and 2-7 in games held at a neutral site this season.

The Hoyas won their third straight one-run game with a 3-2 victory over Navy on Wednesday at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, Md.  Junior Ryan Weisenberg went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while freshman Eddie McCabe was 2-for-3 with a walk.

The Hoyas are 1-4 against Atlantic 10 opponents this season.  Davidson swept three games from Georgetown Feb. 23-25 at Wilson Field in Davison, N.C.  The Wildcats outscored the Hoyas by a combined score of 35-12. 

The Hoyas split two games against Saint Joseph's March 10-11 in Port Charlotte, Fla.  The Hawks won 4-3 and the Hoyas picked up a 4-1 victory.

Georgetown is batting .240 as a team.  McCabe is hitting .308 (36-for-117) and ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in hits (36) and is fourth in RBI (24).  Senior Richie O'Reilly is batting .298 (17-for-57) and is second on the team in RBI (10).  Sophomore Ryan Davis has a .250 average (27-for-108) and is second on the squad in hits (27).

On the mound, sophomore Brent Killam (3-1, 2.16) leads the team in wins (3) and innings pitched (41.1).  Senior Jimmy Swad (2-2, 2.59) has picked up a save in four of the Hoyas 10 wins.
