FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior
Sydney Green put together an excellent performance at No. 1 singles to lead the George Mason University women's tennis team during a 5-2 setback to Hampton Wednesday afternoon.
Green won her first set, 6-3, then cruised in the second (6-1) to earn the point for the Patriots. The match is an extension of the junior's strong play, as Green has now won her past three singles matches.
In addition to Green's performance, junior
Nicole Haigwood also picked up a point for the Patriots with a dominating performance at No. 6. She swept the first set, then captured a 6-2 win in the second. It marked Haigwood's fifth singles victory this season.
In addition, sophomore
Rachel Lee battled in her match at No. 5 and almost grabbed the Patriots' third point of the day. After dropping her opening set, Lee won 6-1 in the second. But in the third pro set, she could not come out on top, falling, 10-6.
Haigwood was a part of Mason's best doubles performance at No. 3, alongside freshman
Hannah Cianciola. The duo fought hard and came away with a 7-5 victory in the contest.
The Patriots return to the Mason Courts on Friday at 3:30 p.m. for a Revolutionary Rivalry match against George Washington.
