MATCHUP DETAILS
Wednesday, April 11 – vs. Georgetown University ("George Mason Softball Complex"), 4:00 p.m.
FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason Softball team (11-23, 2-7 A-10) returns home for a single game against the Georgetown Hoyas, marking the third consecutive season the teams have squared off on a Wednesday midweek contest, and the fourth straight year they've played one another. Game time for George Mason's first home midweek game of the season is scheduled 4 p.m.
The Patriots won an eight-inning thriller last year against the Hoyas by a score of 2-1. After the game was scoreless through seven full innings, Georgetown broke the ice in the top of the eighth to go up 1-0. The Patriots showed resiliency and won it in the bottom half of the eighth with a walk-off double by
Katherine Marsh. Starting pitcher
Bekah Ansbro threw six scoreless innings and
Alyssa Lawton notched her second two-hit game of her career.
In the Patriots' last five games, RS-junior
Jess Middleton has posted a slash line of .467/.467/.600 with five RBI. All five of her runs driven in came in last Wednesday's doubleheader at Towson, three of them in game one to mark a career high. Two of Middleton's hits went for extra bases and she handled all seven fielding chances while playing primarily second base.
Sophomore
Alyssa Lawton has hit safely in her last four games – the longest hitting streak of her career. Her hot streak sees her hitting .417 (5-for-12) and has bumped her on-base percentage this season to .382, which is now the third highest on the team. Lawton has started in head coach
Joe Verbanic's lineup in eight of the last nine games, a stretch that's seen her record her first career RBI (March 31 vs. Saint Louis) and double (April 8 at Fordham).
Senior
Brooke Sullivan picked up a double and two RBI last week, and is now second on the team with 10 two-baggers. Sullivan's next RBI will tie her single-season career high of 13, a mark she set in 2016. She is also three hits shy of tying her 2017 total, and has already reached base (hits, walks and hit by pitch) 51 times to set a new single-season career high, while consequently posting a .440 on-base percentage to lead the team.
Sophomore
Bekah Ansbro and freshman
Haellie Gordon have started the last four games for the Green and Gold. The duo has logged 21.0 of the possible 22.1 innings during those four games. The duo's production in the circle makes George Mason one of two teams in the Atlantic 10 to have two pitchers throw at least 80 innings. Gordon leads the team at 82.0 and Ansbro is close behind at 80.0.
