Patriots Host James Madison In Midweek Matchup

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team returns home for a midweek, non-conference contest against James Madison on Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

Last time out, Mason (14-16, 6-3 A-10) dropped the final game of its series at Davidson, falling to the Wildcats 9-5 on Sunday at Wilson Field in Davidson, N.C.

Senior Trevor Kelly went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while classmate Tyler Nelin was 3-for-5 with a run scored.  Freshman Daniel Brooks was 1-for-1 with two RBI.

The Patriots have won seven of their last eight home games to improve to 11-3 at Spuhler Field.

Mason has a team batting average of .258 through 30 games.  Sophomore Logan Driscoll is hitting .393 (46-for-117) and leads the team in hits (46) and RBI (29).  Nelin is batting .344 (21-for-61) and is fifth on the team in hits (21).  Kelly has a .298 average (36-for-121) and ranks second on the team in hits (36) and RBI (23).

On the mound, junior Zach Mort has a 3-1 record with a 1.73 ERA and is tied for the team lead in starts (8).  Senior Ryan Ricci is 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA and leads Mason in appearances (15). 

Mason and James Madison split two one-run games last season, with each team winning on the road.  The Patriots built a 4-0 lead and held on for a 7-6 victory on April 5, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va.  The Dukes scored the first four runs of the game in a 4-3 win over the Patriots on May 9, 2017 at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

SCOUTING REPORT

James Madison has an overall record of 15-16, including a mark of 2-7 against Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opponents.  The Dukes are 10-10 at home and 5-6 on the road this season.

The Dukes dropped their fourth straight game on Tuesday, falling 2-1 to Maryland in 12 innings at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va.

James Madison is batting .253 as a team.  Freshman Josh Jones is hitting .330 (32-for-97) and is second on the team in hits (32).  Senior Adam Sisk is batting .300 (33-for-110) and leads the Dukes in hits (33).  He ranks second on the squad in home runs (4) and RBI (17).

On the mound, sophomore Shelton Perkins had a 3-0 record with a 3.38 ERA.  Senior Matt Colon has a 0.79 ERA and leads the team in appearances (14) and is tied for the team lead in saves (2).

Freshman Nick Stewart was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday.  He allowed one run on two hits and struck out nine over a career-best 7.1 innings against The College of Charleston on Sunday.

STRIKE ZONE

Mason has faced James Madison more than any other team in program history.  The Patriots are 52-64 all-time against the Dukes.
