FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its series against Richmond, falling 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (13-13, 5-1 A-10) and Richmond (16-11, 3-3 A-10) were scoreless after three innings, but the Spiders took the lead in the top of the fourth.
Richmond senior Daniel Brumbaugh led off the inning with a single to right field off Mason starter
Brian Marconi. With two outs, freshman Tim Miller's fly ball was dropped and Brumbaugh scored all the way from first on the error to put the Spiders in front 1-0.
Richmond starter Robbie Baker retired 12 of the first 14 Mason batters he faced in the game.
The Spiders added two more runs in the top of the seventh and another in the top of the eighth to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Patriots threatened in the eighth against Spiders reliever James Hulbert.

Frank Sturek singled to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, sophomore
Logan Driscoll walked to force in the Patriots lone run of the game to cut the lead to 4-1.
Richmond loaded the bases in the ninth and tacked on a run for the 5-1 final to snap Mason's seven-game home winning streak.
Marconi (2-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits over 7.0 innings and took the loss. Senior
Saul Aguilera entered the game in the eighth and allowed one run. Freshman
Ryan Miles surrendered a run in the ninth.
Baker (3-1) allowed four hits over 6.0 scoreless innings to earn the win. Closer Layne Looney recorded four strikeouts over 1.2 innings to pick up his fourth save of the season for the Spiders.
Sturek went 2-for-4 with a double, while
Logan Driscoll was 1-for-3 and drove in the only run of the game for the Patriots.
The Patriots are back in action for a non-conference, midweek matchup against Longwood on Wednesday at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville, Va. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
