FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team swept a doubleheader from Richmond, claiming a walk-off 1-0 win in 10 innings in game one and a 5-1 victory in the nightcap on Saturday at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

In a pitcher's duel in game one, Mason (13-12, 5-0 A-10) starter Zach Mort and Richmond (15-11, 2-3 A-10) starter Tim Miller were nearly unhittable.

Mort retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced in the game, with Richmond's only baserunner reaching on an error.

The Patriots threatened in the bottom of the fourth.  Sophomore Logan Driscoll doubled to right field and senior Trevor Kelly followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.  Miller struck out the next two batters to wiggle out of the jam.

The Spiders turned the game over to the bullpen in the eighth, with junior Matt Olson taking over on the hill for Miller.

Mason senior Ryan Ricci took over for Mort and retired the Spiders in order in the top of the 10th.

In the home half of the inning, junior Greg Popatak II led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.  After another Richmond pitching change, senior Tyler Nelin was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out.

The stage was set for senior Michael Smith, who worked the count full before delivering a single to left-center with Popatak racing around from second base to give the Patriots a walk-off 1-0 win.

Mort allowed six singles and struck out eight without a walk over 9.0 innings in a no-decision.  He has pitched nine innings in each of his last two starts.  Ricci (3-1) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn his third win of the season.

For the Spiders, Miller gave up just two hits and struck out seven over 7.0 innings.  Olson (0-1) allowed one run in 2.0 innings and took the loss.

Logan Driscoll went 2-for-4 and had the only extra-base hit in the game with a double in the fourth inning.  Smith was 1-for-4 and drove in the lone run of the game.

In game two, the Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the first against Richmond starter Aaron Winkler.

Mason graduate student Frank Sturek led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Freshman Daniel Brooks drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field, with Sturek coasting across the plate to put the Patriots up 1-0.

With one out in the second, senior Garett Driscoll was hit by a pitch and classmate Tyler Nelin singled through the left side to put runners on first and second.  With two outs, junior Alejandro Aponte knocked in a run with a single to center to make the score 2-0.

The Spiders loaded the bases with one out in the second against Mason starter Bryce Nightengale, who recorded a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam.

Richmond scored its lone run of the day in the fifth inning, but the Patriots offense responded in the sixth.

With one out, Kelly doubled and went to third on a wild pitch.  Junior Tim Quinn worked the count full and then tripled down the right field line into the corner, with Kelly crossing the plate to increase the Patriots lead to 3-1.  For Quinn, it was the first triple of his collegiate career.

Garett Driscoll followed with a sacrifice fly to left field with Quinn scoring to make it a 4-1 game.

In the eighth, Brooks doubled, Logan Driscoll walked and Quinn singled to load the bases.  With one out, Garett Driscoll picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly for the final run in Mason's 5-1 victory.

The Patriots swept both games of a doubleheader for the third time this season.

Nightengale (2-2) allowed one run on five hits over 6.0 innings to earn the win.  Garett Driscoll, who began the game as the designated hitter, tossed two scoreless innings.  Ricci pitched a scoreless ninth.

Winkler (2-3) surrendered four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings and suffered the loss.

Quinn went 2-for-4 with a RBI and scored a run and Nelin was 2-for-4.  Brooks and Aponte each went 1-for-3 and drove in a run.

In the last seven games, Mason starting pitchers have allowed just eight runs (three earned) combined over 50.2 innings of work.

The Patriots have won 13 of their last 17 games overall, including seven straight at Spuhler Field to improve to 11-2 at home this season.

With a 5-0 record against the Atlantic 10, the Patriots are off to their best start in conference play since joining the A-10 in 2014.

The Patriots and Spiders wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
