FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team wrapped up a hectic weekend of competition with a chilly and windy day of action at the Occoquan Sprints Sunday at Sandy Run Regional Park.
A day after racing twice in Norfolk, Mason crews once again put together two competitions in some boats and improved upon Saturday's results, despite the natural fatigue one would expect from such a busy weekend.
Leading the way for Mason was the Varsity 8+ boat, which qualified for the grand final, then finished just seconds behind Georgetown in the afternoon competition.
"Today was a strong day of racing in tough conditions," head coach
Ted Nagorsen said. "I thought all of our crews across the board improved upon our racing from yesterday. That's hard to do when today's the third or fourth race in 24 hours for most of the girls on the team. Anytime you go down the race course, it takes a lot out of you. To do it twice today and once or twice today in tough conditions after traveling is very challenging."
Mason's Varsity 8+ placed third in its morning heat, crossing the finish line in 7:45.68 to qualify for the final. Then in the afternoon final, the Patriots put together an efficient race while posting a good time of 7:21.23. Georgetown's second boat crossed in 7:18.40 while the top crew was at 6:57.24.
"Georgetown had a good day today – they have some fast boats," Nagorsen said. "We were hoping to give them a challenge and some of the crews did, especially our Varsity 8+. They gave them a very good race."
Elsewhere, Mason's Second Varsity 8+ placed third in its race in a time of 7:45.04. Georgetown's boats crossed the line in 7:21.28 and 7:23.13, respectively. The Second Varsity 8+ finished nearly 25 seconds ahead of Robert Morris and close to 35 seconds in front of Loyola (Md.). Mason's Third Varsity 8+ wrapped up its race in 8:42.98.
The Patriot Varsity 4+ boat finished third in 9:10.18, placing ahead of Loyola (Md.). Georgetown took the top two spots in that race.
"We're looking forward to having a couple weeks without races," Nagorsen said. "We're going to try to reset and take a deep breath after a tough weekend of racing. We're going to focus on the George Cup and the GW Invite in two weeks. This break will give us time to prepare and get ready. It's been a tough weekend but we've certainly improved as a group."
