Patriots Host Fairfield In Home Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team begins a three-game series against Fairfield University on Saturday, with game one of a doubleheader scheduled for 11 a.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

Mason (0-7) will be looking for its first win of the season.  The Patriots were swept in a four-game series by Butler last weekend at Lexington County Baseball Stadium in Lexington, S.C.

Sophomore Logan Driscoll is batting .560 (14-25) with three doubles.  He leads the team in runs scored (6) and is tied for the team lead in RBI (4).  Driscoll has hit safely in all seven games.  Senior Tyler Nelin is hitting .304 (7-23) with a double and two RBI. 

On the mound, junior Zach Mort is scheduled to make the start in game one of the series against Fairfield.  He has pitched into the seventh inning in each of his first two starts of the season and leads the team in innings pitched (13.1) and strikeouts (14).

The Stags (0-4) will also be searching for their first victory of the season. 

Mason and Fairfield last met during the 2014 season with the Stags taking two of three games in the series.  The Patriots are 13-6 in 19 all-time meetings against the Stags.

Last season, Mason finished with a 26-33 overall record, including a mark of 13-11 against Atlantic 10 Conference opponents.  The Patriots were 9-20 at home, 14-9 on the road and 3-4 in games played at a neutral site.

SCOUTING REPORT

Fairfield finished with a 31-24 overall record in 2017, including a mark of 17-7 against Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents.  The Stags were 12-6 at home, 17-14 on the road and 2-4 in games played at a neutral site last season.

The Stags were swept in a three-game series by Georgia Southern to start the season and fell 13-11 to Hartford on Wednesday.  Fairfield surrendered five home runs in the loss to Hartford.

Junior Jack Gethings is batting .417 (5-12) with two RBI and three runs scored.  Junior Tom Ryan is hitting .333 (4-12) with three RBI, while classmate Anthony Boselli has a .313 average (5-16) with a home run and leads the team with five RBI.

STRIKE ZONE

Actor and comedian Kevin Nealon, known for roles on Saturday Night Live and the movie Happy Gilmore, took classes at Fairfield University.
