Patriots Begin Three-Game Series Against Lafayette Friday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team begins a three-game series against Lafayette on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

Mason (5-10) went 2-2 on its recent four-game road trip to Florida.  The Patriots defeated Villanova 6-1 in their first game and then won the final game of a three-game series at Florida International by the final score of 12-8. 

Freshman Daniel Brooks hit a three-run home run in the Mason's five-run ninth inning against the Panthers.  It was the first home run and the first RBIs of his collegiate career.

Junior Bailey Klein went 2-for-5 and drove in five runs, sophomore Logan Driscoll was 4-for-6 with a RBI and four runs scored and senior Trevor Kelly finished 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored in the game. 

Beginning Friday, the Patriots will play 11 of their next 13 games at home. 

Driscoll is batting .441 (26-for-59) and leads the team in hits (26), RBI (10) and runs scored (14).  Senior Tyler Nelin is hitting .344 (11-for-32), while Kelly is batting .283 (17-for-60) and ranks second on the team in hits (17) and third in RBI (8).

On the mound, junior Zach Mort is 1-1 with a 2.39 ERA in four starts.  He leads the team in innings pitched (26.1) and strikeouts (33).

The Patriots are facing Lafayette for the first time in program history.  The Leopards are the third straight opponent that the Patriots are facing for the first time.

SCOUTING REPORT

Lafayette has a 7-10 overall record.  The Leopards are 6-10 on the road and 1-0 in their lone game played at a neutral site this season.  Lafayette will play its first home game of the season March 24 against Lehigh.

The Leopards fell 8-6 on the road at VCU on Wednesday.  After allowing five runs in the first inning, Lafayette scored six unanswered runs to take the lead but VCU plated three in the sixth in the win. 

Sophomore John Marti is batting .370 (20-for-54) and leads the team in hits (20) and runs scored (13).  He is second on the team in doubles (5), and RBI (10).  Senior Patrick Nelson is hitting .269 (18-for-67) and leads the team in RBI (14).

On the mound, sophomore Brett Kreyer has a 1-2 record with a 5.03 ERA and is tied for the team lead with four starts.  Freshman Michael Dunn has a 2-0 record with a 2.79 ERA in seven appearances.

After winning five-of-six games Feb. 27 to March 6, the Leopards have dropped four of their last five games.
