CLEVELAND – George Mason redshirt juniors Tejon Anthony and Matthew Voss advanced to day two of the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships after winning their second match during the opening day of competition on Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

In his first bout of the day, Anthony dropped a 5-4 decision at 141 pounds to Lehigh redshirt freshman Luke Karam, who was seeded 13th entering the championships.

Anthony advanced to the second day of competition with a 9-4 decision in wrestlebacks over Old Dominion redshirt sophomore Alex Madrigal.

The Mason captain was aggressive from the start, recording a thunderous takedown and never looked back after that.

Anthony will now face Navy junior Nicholas Gil on Friday. Gil won by decision (9-6) over Appalachian State's Irvin Enriquez in his first match, then dropped a major decision (13-4) to Yianni Diakomihalis from Cornell.

Mason redshirt junior Matt Voss was defeated in his first match of the day, falling to second-seeded Adam Coon from Michigan by major decision, 12-3 in the first round.

Voss was looking to advance in the consolation bracket against Northwestern's Conan Jennings. The entire match was an absolute grind, neither wrestler was giving up any ground. The match ended up going to a tiebreaker. Voss took the lead with an escape and then recorded a takedown which sealed the match. Voss will now face Jere Heino from Campbell University tomorrow. Heino won his first match by decision over Matt Stencel from Central Michigan (8-3). He then was defeated by the number one seed Kyle Snyder from The Ohio State University, by a technical fall (23-8).

Mason redshirt senior Ibrahim Bunduka dropped his first match of the day, falling to tenth-seeded Sebastian Rivera from Northwestern by major decision, 14-3 in the first round.

Bunduka looked to advance to day two in the consolation round against Northern Illinois sophomore Brock Hudkins.  After a scoreless first period, Hudkins scored a takedown in the second period to take the lead and didn't look back after that. Hudkins ended the match with a fall, eliminating Bunduka from the 125-pound field.

Action continues on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
