BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Missed opportunities and miscues hurt the George Mason women's lacrosse team in its first road game of spring break.
The Patriots suffered a 14-11 loss to Campbell on Wednesday at Barker-Lane Stadium. Mason scored just 11 goals on 26 shots while also committing 17 turnovers. That allowed the Camels (3-5) to take the lead late in the first half and pull away after halftime.
Senior
Hannah Warpinski led the Patriots (4-2) tied a career high with three goals. Senior
Lindsey Tangeman and junior
Chachi Kelehan each scored two goals and dished out an assist and freshman
Erin Donoghue added two goals.
The Patriots took a 6-5 lead with a little more than 10 minutes left in the first half on a goal by Tangeman. But the Camels scored the next four goals, including two before halftime, and never relinquished the lead after that.
Sophomore
Hailey Johnson and Kelehan scored back-to-back goals early in the second half to pull Mason back within one. But Campbell responded with three straight goals to grab its biggest lead of the day, 12-8, with 15:40 to go. Mason never got closer than two after that and Campbell's Melissa Placek scored her game-high sixth goal with 3:18 remaining to seal the victory.
The Patriots struggled inside the eight-meter arc, shooting 3 of 9 from the free-position attempt. Johnson and senior captain
Holly Tevis also scored goals and sophomore
Kelley Reilley and Donoghue each collected four draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Melissa Semkiw, the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week this past week, made seven saves.
The Patriots will head down to the Sunshine State to play Stetson at noon on Sunday in DeLand, Fla.
