FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team warmed up for this weekend's A-10 matches with a 7-5 victory vs. Mary Washington at International Country Club on Thursday night.

Mason (2-0) and Mary Washington played four doubles and eight singles matches in a specialized format. The two teams split the doubles matches, then mason won five out of eight singles contests to secure the victory.

"Playing this unique, 12-point match format helped us get more pressure play for some of our young talented players early in the season," head coach Steve Curtis said. "This format allows us to highlight the depth of our team this season."

Mason's No. 4 doubles duo of sophomore Liz Lowe and freshman Hannah Cianciola won 8-2 to open the match. Then, Mary Washington tied it up with a win at No. 1 doubles. Mason earned its second point with a win at No. 3. Junior Nicole Haigwood and freshman Kayleigh Hahn defeated their MW counterparts, 8-6. The Eagles won a tiebreak at No. 2 to send the match to singles all tied up.

The singles matches featured an 8-game, pro set format.

Junior Sydney Green opened singles play with an 8-6 win at No. 1, but MW took the No. 4 singles match to once again tie the match (3-3).

Freshman Hannah Yang won at No. 3 singles while squeaking out an 8-7 tiebreak victory. She improved to 2-0 in singles on the dual season.

The Eagles won at No. 2 to make it 4-4, but Mason again took a lead after Hannah Cianciola won at No. 6 singles in easy fashion (8-1).

The match again was knotted at 5-5, but Mason won the No. 7 and No. 8 singles matches to claim the victory.

Lowe won 8-7 at No. 7 and Haigwood claimed an 8-2 win to round out the scoring for the Green & Gold.

"This tight match was a good warm-up for us before heading to Pittsburgh to play Dayton and Duquesne this weekend," Curtis said.

The Patriots were without the services of talented freshman Christine McCarthy, who missed the match due to illness.

The Patriots play the Flyers on Saturday at 4 p.m. Mason then wraps up the weekend with a contest against the Dukes on Sunday at 3 p.m.
