ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The George Mason University women's tennis team won two out of three doubles contests to highlight a Sunday affair vs. host Navy in Annapolis.
Mason took the doubles point, but dropped the singles contests as Navy (8-4) came away with the victory.
"We are improving in many areas," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "Even though it may not be evident in the overall team score, we are playing better in our individual matches. This has been the toughest six-consecutive games I have ever put together. Now we can see if it has made us tough enough for the remainder of the season."
That six-match stretch has included contests against a pair of A-10 powers, No. 23 Virginia and perennial Big South contender Radford. Throughout the stretch, Mason's crew of five freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors has shown resolve and grit while building confidence and experience.
Mason's No. 3 doubles tandem of freshmen
Hannah Cianciola and
Christine McCarthy won their match over Navy's Rogers/Wreder tandem, 6-3.
Then at No. 2, freshmen
Brianna Gibbs and
Hannah Yang earned a 6-4 victory over Navy's Catalina Rico and Miranda Deng.
In singles action, Gibbs went three sets at No. 2 while playing an excellent match against one of the region's elite players. Against Carlee Conway, Gibbs took the first set, 6-0. She fell 6-3 in the second, before the match moved to a pro set format in the third. Gibbs battled hard in that deciding frame but ultimately fell, 10-8.
Mason returns to the DMV to take on Howard in Washington, D.C. on Saturday (March 3). First serve is scheduled for noon at the Washington Tennis & Education Center.
