CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team fell in a 4-0 decision to No. 23 Virginia on Tuesday evening at the Boar's Head Sport Club.
The match concluded a difficult stretch for the young Patriot squad against some of the Atlantic 10's top teams and a nationally-ranked power within the region.
The Patriots once again started five freshmen in the six singles positions and the group gained valuable experience against some of the nation's top tennis talent.
"Our young players were able to experience playing a top-25 team," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "UVa had just beaten No. 12 Michigan over the weekend. Experience with that level of competition is important for our continued development."
Hannah Yang and
Brianna Gibbs each took two games from their opponents at No. 3 and No. 2 singles, respectively. In addition,
Christine McCarthy,
Kayleigh Hahn and
Hannah Cianciola all were involved in battles in the fourth through sixth positions before those matches were called late in the evening.
At doubles, Cianciola and junior
Sydney Green faced the nation's 14
th-ranked doubles duo at No. 1 and enjoyed the challenge.
Elsewhere, Gibbs and Yang took four games off the Cavalier duo of Rosie Johanson and Chloe Gullickson but could not complete the upset.
The Patriots return to the DMV on Friday (February 23) for a matchup against in-state foe Radford at SGCC.
