MONTCLAIR, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team dropped an A-10 contest to league power Richmond on Friday afternoon at Montclair Country Club.
The Patriots fell to the Spiders by the score of 7-0. Mason – which starts three freshmen and two sophomores at singles – continues to grow and build on results against some solid competition in the early going.
"This was a tough match against one of the top teams in our league," head coach Steve Curtis said. "We battled, but could not overcome the Spiders today."
The Spiders claimed the doubles point to start the match, despite strong competition from the Patriots. The Mason No. 1 duo of
Sydney Green and
Rachel Lee won four games against one of the league's premier doubles tandems, while Mason's freshmen duo of
Brianna Gibbs and
Hannah Yang won three games in their match.
In singles, Richmond clinched the match after victories at No. 4, 2 and 3 singles, respectively.
Sophomore
Liz Lowe won five games in her second set but could not force a third, ultimately falling at No. 6. At No. 5, freshman
Kayleigh Hahn won three games in her first set, but fell after two sets in her match.
The Patriots return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 20) at ACC foe Virginia. First serve in Charlottesville is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
