FAIRFAX, Va. – A formidable crosstown foe provided a tough challenge for the George Mason wrestling team on Thursday night.

The Patriots suffered a 38-3 loss to American in a non-conference dual at the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC). Mason redshirt sophomore Justin Yorkdale notched the team's lone victory of the night, defeating Elijah Murphy at 149 pounds with a 6-0 decision.

American (7-6), which entered with nationally ranked wrestlers in four weight classes, won by fall in three bouts (141, 197 and 285) and technical fall in another (133). The Eagles also won by a major decision at 157 pounds.

Mason (3-13) nearly picked up victories in two bouts. Redshirt junior Austin Harrison suffered a 3-2 loss to Connor Allshouse at 184 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Garrett Griffith also battled hard in a 4-2 loss to Anthony Wokasch at 165 pounds.

The Patriots will try to bounce back in their final dual of the season against VMI at 2 p.m. on Sunday on Senior Day at the RAC. Mason will honor seniors Ibrahim Bunduka and Daniel Mika before the match.
