PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The George Mason University women's tennis team traveled to Pittsburgh this weekend to take on Atlantic 10 foes Dayton and Duquesne.
 
Mason (2-2, 0-2) dropped a 7-0 contest to Dayton (3-4, 1-1) on Friday afternoon, then fell to Duquesne (6-0, 2-0) by the same score on Saturday. For one of the youngest teams in the nation, the matches provided some valuable learning experiences that will benefit the Patriots as the season moves forward.
 
"This was a tough weekend for us, but we learned some areas where we need to improve," head coach Steve Curtis said. "Our goal is always to continue to get better."
 
On Saturday against the Flyers, junior Sydney Green and freshman Brianna Gibbs played well for the Green & Gold.
 
Green pushed one of the conference's top players to the limit at No. 1 singles. Against Marlys Bridgham, Green battled in the first set, with Bridgham taking it 7-5. The second set was just as competitive, with Green falling 6-4 in the deciding frame.
 
Gibbs opened at No. 2 singles against Mattea Kilstofte and won the first set in convincing fashion, 6-0. However, the Dayton student-athlete rallied to win the next two sets by the scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
 
On Sunday against Duquesne, Green again battled in her match against the Dukes' No. 1 player, Kylie Isaacs. She played a competitive first set (3-6), then fought in the second before falling, 6-4.
 
Gibbs partnered with freshman Hannah Yang to play a solid contest at No. 2 doubles, but the duo ultimately fell to their Dukes counterparts, 6-4.
 
Mason now returns to the Commonwealth for another A-10 match this Friday (Feb. 16). The Patriots will battle Richmond at Montclair Country Club in Montclair, Va.
