FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team is set to compete in the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open, hosted by Binghamton University on Sunday at the Events Center in Binghamton, N.Y.
Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the finals slated for 3 p.m. The event will run all day through Trackwrestling.
The Bearcat Open will feature 12 teams and over 200 wrestlers from across the country, including five teams ranked in the top 15 nationally.
Top-ranked Penn State will headline the tournament that also includes No. 6 N.C. State, No. 10 Lehigh and No. 14 Cornell and Princeton.
Binghamton is one of nine EIWA programs participating in the tournament, along with Army, Brown, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Harvard, Lehigh, Navy and Princeton.
Last time out, the Patriots had six wrestlers place in the top five at the Hokie Open on Sunday, Nov. 4 in Roanoke, Va.
Redshirt senior
Matthew Voss placed first at 285 pounds, while freshman
Kolby Ho picked up three wins to place second at 157 pounds.
Voss, who was named EWL Wrestler of the Week after a 5-0 start to the season, recorded four wins to take the title in the open bracket at heavyweight, including a 3-2 decision over 14th-ranked Cory Daniel (North Carolina) in the final.
Freshman
Mel Ortiz won three matches to place third at 133 pounds and freshman
Cornelius Schuster also won three bouts to place third at 165 pounds.
Mason redshirt junior
Colston DiBlasi was fourth at 165 pounds, while redshirt sophomore
Eli Spencer registered four pins and placed fifth at 197 pounds.
The Bearcat Open is the second of three straight tournaments for Mason. The Patriots will compete in the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Annapolis, Md.
MAT FACT
The Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open is named after former Binghamton wrestler Jonathan Kaloust, who enlisted in the military after graduating and was killed in the line of duty.
Over the past five years, 25 NCAA Champions and 50 All-Americans have competed in the tournament held at the Events Center in Binghamton.
