Patriots Face Bloomsburg Thursday, Take On Lock Haven Friday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team begins Eastern Wrestling League action on the road, facing Bloomsburg on Thursday at the Nelson Field House in Bloomsburg, Pa.  The Patriots will then take on Lock Haven on Friday at Thomas Field House in Lock Haven, Pa.  Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Mason and Bloomsburg met in the EWL opener last season, with the Huskies earning an 18-17 win over the Patriots in a match that went down to the final bout of the evening.

Tejon Anthony (141), Eli Spencer (197) and Matthew Voss were among the five Patriots to pick up a victory in the match against the Huskies.

In their first dual of the season, the Patriots defeated VMI 20-17 on Nov. 2 at Cormack Hall in Lexington, Va. 

Mason won five of the last seven matches against the Keydets.  VMI led by two points going into the final bout, where Voss notched a 20-3 technical fall at heavyweight to cement the victory for the Patriots.

Voss has a 9-0 record, with three of his victories by fall.  He ranks ninth in the nation by NWCA and is ranked 10th by InterMat.

Spencer has an 11-4 record and leads the team in wins, while Anthony is 7-3 on the season.

SCOUTING BLOOMSBURG

Bloomsburg finished with a 6-9 record last season, including a 2-4 mark against EWL opponents.

The Huskies are 0-2 this season.  Bloomsburg fell to No. 17 Purdue 35-5 and suffered a 24-19 setback against Sacred Heart on Nov. 10 at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y.

Junior Willy Girard (10-5) leads the Huskies with 10 victories, while classmate Trevor Allard is second on the team with eight wins.

SCOUTING LOCK HAVEN

Lock Haven, ranked #17 InterMat Dual, is competing in its first dual of the season.  The Bald Eagles were 12-4 last season, including a 4-2 mark against EWL opponents.

Four Bald Eagles are nationally ranked by InterMat.  Alex Klucker (157) is No. 17, Chance Marsteller (165) is No. 3, Corey Hazel (184) is No. 17 and Thomas Haines (285) is No. 9.

Redshirt freshman D.J. Fehlman (16-2) leads the Bald Eagles in wins, while junior Jared Siegrist (13-3) is second on the team with 13 victories.

The heavyweight matchup between the Patriots and Bald Eagles will feature two NCAA qualifiers. 

Mason captain Matthew Voss will face Lock Haven redshirt senior Thomas Haines.  Haines is ranked No. 9 by InterMat, while Voss is ranked No. 10.

MAT FACT

George Mason head coach Frank Beasley competed at Lincoln College and Bloomsburg, where he was a team captain and finished fourth at the 2006 EWL Championships.

Beasley was a two-time Academic All-American and recipient of education and English department honors at Bloomsburg, where he earned a dual degree in 2006.  He also earned his master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Bloomsburg.

As an assistant coach at his alma mater for two seasons, Beasley helped the Huskies produce nine national qualifiers and the program's first All-American in more than a decade.
