FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team is back in action on Saturday, competing in the 41st annual Navy classic beginning at 10 a.m. at Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md.
The Patriots will battle 16 teams for the Navy Classic championship. Air Force, American, Brown, Bucknell, Campbell, Cleveland State, Delaware Valley, Edinboro, Indiana, Kent State, Michigan State, Navy, Ohio, Old Dominion and Oregon State will compete at this year's event.
There will be 12 nationally ranked wrestlers in this year's field and at least one ranked wrestler in six of the 10 weight classes. Returning to defend their 2017 Navy Classic title are Navy's Nicholas Gil (141), Brown's Christian Lafragola (184) and Oregon State's Corey Griego (197).
As a team, Mason finished in a tie for 14th place at last year's Navy Classic. Navy won the team title for the first time since 2011, Purdue was second and Old Dominion finished third.
The Midshipmen have claimed the team title in 20 of the previous 40 years that the Navy Classic has been held.
Tejon Anthony won four matches in the consolation round and placed sixth at 141 pounds, including a 3-1 decision in the semifinals. He has placed in each of his three trips to the Navy Classic, including a third-place finish in 2015.
Matthew Voss placed sixth at 285 pounds and recorded two of his victories in the tournament by fall.
Voss, who is ranked 10th by InterMat and 17th by WIN Magazine, has placed twice at the Navy Classic, including a fourth-place finish in 2015.
Last time out, the Patriots had four place-winners at the John Kaloust Bearcat Open.
Voss won the title at 285 pounds, redshirt junior
Colston DiBlasi placed second (165), redshirt sophomore
Eli Spencer placed third (197) and freshman
Mel Ortiz placed sixth (133).
