FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team competed in the Green-Gold Wrestle-Offs on Saturday at the George Mason Field House, with the gold team earning a 21-20 victory.
In the first match of the afternoon, freshman
Zac Feight scored a takedown with a minute to go in the first period to take the lead over junior
Justin Yorkdale.
Yorkdale tied the score with an escape early in the second, but Feight scored with a takedown with 30 seconds left in the period to take a 4-2 lead.
Yorkdale battled to tie the match 5-5 and again at 7-7 to force overtime, where he notched a 9-7 decision.
Freshman
Kolby Ho, who wrestled two matches on the day, recorded a 20-6 technical fall over classmate
Ali Salem in his first bout to give the green team a 5-3 match score lead.
In match three, redshirt sophomore
Talha Farooq led 5-3 after the first period and 8-4 going into the third over junior
Spencer Reed. A 10-5 decision by Farooq put the gold team back in front, 6-5.
Freshman
Paul Pierce saw his first action, building a 4-1 first-period lead over redshirt sophomore
Devin Rolon on his way to a 9-2 decision to make the score 9-5 team gold.
Redshirt sophomore
Lio Quezada started quick with a takedown midway through the first and added four near-fall points to take a 6-0 lead over freshman
Nick Lilley in the fifth match of the day.
Quezada went on to earn a 9-2 decision to cut the team gold lead to 9-8.
In a defensive match in the sixth bout of the day, redshirt sophomore
Eli Spencer scored a takedown against freshman
Alex Donahue with under 10 seconds left in the first period.
Spencer added to his total with an escape early in the second and a takedown early in the third to make the score 5-0. He posted a 6-0 decision to propel the green team into the lead, 11-9.
The heavyweights clashed in match seven, with redshirt senior
Matthew Voss, who ranks 12th nationally by InterMat, winning by technical fall, 19-4, over freshman
Ramses Montalvo.
With the gold team holding a 14-11 advantage, freshman
Mel Ortiz earned a fall over Farooq at 1:35 of the first period in the eighth match of the day to put the green team back in front, 17-14.
In match nine, redshirt sophomore
Philip Stolfi took a 3-2 lead against Rolon with a reversal late in the first period and never looked back. Stolfi made it 5-2 with another reversal early in the second and went on to an 8-2 decision for team gold to even the match 17-17.
In the 10th match, redshirt senior
Tejon Anthony registered three takedowns against
Justin Yorkdale and took a 6-2 lead into the second period on his way to a 14-7 decision.
Team green led 20-17 going into the final match.
In the last bout, Ho built an 8-4 advantage over junior
Ryan Yorkdale in the first period and went on to a 22-10 major decision to give the gold team a 21-20 victory in the match.
The gold team won last year's Green-Gold Wrestle-Offs 24-20.
The Patriots begin the season against VMI on Friday, Nov. 2 with the match scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
