ANNAPOLIS, Md. – George Mason University junior Edward Ayers won three of four singles matches to lead the Green & Gold over the weekend at the Navy Gold Invitational.

The San Antonio, Texas, product went 3-0 in his section of the 'A' bracket to advance to a playoff match to decide the flight champion. In that championship match versus George Washington's Zicheng Zeng, Ayers won the first set handily (6-2), but Zeng fought back to win the second set, 6-4. Zeng prevailed 10-8 in the shortened third set to claim the title.

But Ayers reached the final on the strength of three solid victories. He opened the weekend with a straight-sets win over Delaware's Guilherme Valdoleiros (6-1, 6-4), then upended Navy's Greg Durham in the next round (6-2, 7-5). In the semifinal, Ayers again needed the minimum number of sets to dispose of his opponent, this time defeating Georgetown's Michael Chen (6-4, 6-3).

In the 'D' flight of the tournament, freshman Chanasorn Nakaurai won two of his three singles matches to place second in his group. He opened his weekend with a marathon victory over George Washington's Hanyu Liu. He won the first set, 7-5, but Liu won the second, 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreaker at 6-6, and Nakaurai prevailed in a gutsy extra points session, 13-11. From there, he could not complete his second match, but rebounded with a victory in his final contest. In that match, he went the distance in a win over Navy's Andrew Hicks (6-7, 7-5, 6-4).

In doubles, sophomore Ryan Charles and freshman Erick Rivas picked up a win in the 'B' flight Harford's Brocanelli/Villasmil tandem, 6-2.

In the 'G' doubles flight, senior Amir Alkhafaji and freshman Michael Pollatos went a perfect 3-0 to claim the title. That 3-0 sequence includes victories over teams from Navy (6-2) and Georgetown (6-4).

The Patriots return to action this week (Oct. 18-22) at the ITA Regional in Blacksburg, Va.
