FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University softball head coach 
Joe Verbanic has named 
Karla Powell to the coaching staff on Tuesday. Powell will serve as an assistant coach to the program.
 
Powell comes to Mason after her role as head assistant coach at Florida SouthWestern State College (Fort Myers, Fla.) for three years under head coach Robert Iamurri.
 
Prior to Florida SouthWestern, Powell was the head assistant coach at St. Johns River State College (Palatka, Fla.) for one year. In this role, Powell was responsible for all hitting, defense and recruiting, including coaching third base.
 
From 2013-14, Powell served as a volunteer assistant coach at George Washington University. Powell worked closely with hitters, breaking down their swings based on players' tendencies.
 
In 2013, the Ashburn, Va. native worked as a student assistant coach at her alma mater Wisconsin. 
 
The former first baseman and designated hitter enjoyed a decorated playing career at Wisconsin where she was named Third Team All-Big Ten (2012) and First Team All-Big Ten (2011). Powell was also a four-year starter for the Badgers.
