LYNCHBURG, Va. – The George Mason University doubles team of sophomore
Brianna Gibbs and senior
Sydney Green knocked off a team from Penn State and put together a near-upset of the No. 22 ranked doubles team in the nation to lead the Patriots at the ITA Regional this weekend.
Green and Gibbs continued their outstanding fall season with a superb effort in Lynchburg. In their Friday Round of 64 victory over Penn State's team of Gabby O'Gorman and Chelsea Sawyer, Mason's dynamic duo converted the big points necessary to complete a victory over a Power 5 pairing of that caliber. In a back and forth match that ultimately went to a tiebreaker, Mason prevailed 7-5 in the extra points to wrap up the 8-7 win.
In the next round on Saturday, the Green & Gold took on the nation's 22
nd-ranked doubles team – Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton from Maryland. The Patriots again went back and forth with the elite Terrapin unit and came close to forcing a tiebreak in the match with a pair of opportunities. Mason ultimately fell, 8-6, but put forth an excellent performance against a ranked opponent.
Elsewhere in doubles, freshmen
Jackie Nannery and
Hannah Harrod took on Navy's No. 1 doubles tandem of Ansofi Wreder and Kaylah Hodge. Mason's freshmen also remained very composed in the regional spotlight and were down just 7-6 heading into the deciding game. Mason had two changes to make it 7-all but could not convert the opportunities, as Navy took the competitive match, 8-6.
In singles play, Green competed on Friday against No. 15 seed Nika Kozar of Virginia Tech. Green came out firing, taking the first set 6-4 to put pressure on her ranked opponent. Kozar came back to take the second set, 6-2, to force a third. In that competitive set, Green performed admirably but ultimately dropped the frame, 6-4. In that set, Green fought off six match points to keep it going, but couldn't deny a seventh chance by Kozar.
In a pair of non-bracketed singles matches, Nannery and Harrod also earned the chance to show their singles mettle against the region's top talent.
Nannery faced off with fellow talented freshman Tayo Adetunji of Delaware and claimed the first set, 6-3. Her Blue Hen opponent rallied to take the next frame (1-6), setting up a shortened third in which Adetunji came out on top in the extra points, 11-9, despite an impressive battle by Nannery.
Harrod took on Mariona Perez Noguera of Pittsburgh. In a highly competitive first set, Harrod fell in a tiebreaker, 7-4 (6-7 overall in games). Perez Noguera took the second set, 6-2.
"I was pleased with how well we competed against the top talent in our region," head coach Steve Curtis said. "It was a great experience for our student-athletes and we can build on these performances heading into the spring season."
The Patriots now host their annual alumni weekend Oct. 27-28. Then, the Green & Gold will take a winter competitive break before returning to the courts for dual action in 2019.
