FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Delaware in the first dual meet of the season on Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium.
The Mason women's team defeated the Blue Hens 153-147, with the final event of the day deciding the meet. The men's team recorded a 188-110 victory.
On the women's side, the Patriots won 10 events including both relays.
In the opening 200-yard medley relay, seniors
Marla Albanese,
Brittany Murphy, and
Theresa Cotter joined sophomore
Shannon Glesing for a first-place finish (1:47.27).Â
Cotter touched the wall first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.91) and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (58.88).
Murphy took the top spot in two events, winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.89) and 100-yard freestyle (52.74). Albanese finished second in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.30) and 100-yard freestyle (53.40).
Freshman
Laura Hodge claimed two individual events. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.02) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.43), with classmate
Megan Cummins second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.99). Cummins also placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:34.20).
Freshman
Sophie McKinley took the top spot on the podium in the 400-yard IM (4:36.07).
In the deep end of the pool, sophomore
Marina Toone earned the top spot in both springboard events, winning the one-meter with a score of 196.20 and the three-meter with a score of 206.33. Sophomore
Alyx Bridis finished fourth in the one-meter dive (161.25).
In the final event of the afternoon, the combination of junior
Rachel Chalsma, Albanese, Murphy and Hodge finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay by less than a second (3:33.17) to secure the win for the Patriots.
On the men's side, the Patriots won 12 events.
Mason started fast when junior
Christopher Stankiewicz, sophomores
Andres Alarcon and
Dylan Peck and freshman
Will Rastatter combined to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.28).
Alarcon swam to first place finished in both the 100-yard butterfly (50.98) and 200-yard butterfly (1:52.27), while Stankiewicz took the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.92).
Junior
Attila Kiss won three individual events, finishing first in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:32.18), 500-yard freestyle (4:35.57) and 400-yard IM (4:08.95).
Mason took the top three spots in the 400-yard IM, with freshman
Sam Westmont second (4:17.50) and senior
Nicholas Burton third (4:20.66).
Westmont also won the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.27) and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (52.78).
In the 50-yard freestyle, freshman
Nick Ashton took first (21.45), with Rastatter in second (21.61).
Freshman
Colin Graves finished second in both the one-meter springboard (240.30) and three-meter event (231.23). Junior
Joe Amato placed third in the one-meter (212.63) and fourth in the three-meter (203.10).
The Patriots are back in action at the Richmond Duals Oct. 19-20 in Richmond, Va.
