FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team opens its 2018 fall schedule on the shores of the Schuykill River during the Navy Day Regatta Saturday in Philadelphia.
 
Mason will enter six boats in the annual event, including four Collegiate 4+ crews and a pair of College 8+ crews.
 
Action for the Green & Gold begins at 10:04 a.m., with the Open Collegiate 4+. Mason's four boats will be going up against crews from Penn, Delaware, Saint Joseph's, Lafayette, Georgetown and Navy, amongst others.
 
The afternoon timeslot is highlighted by the team's two Collegiate 8+ crews. Those boats will race at 1:08 p.m. against Drexel, Navy, Temple, Army, Villanova and a number of other schools.
 
Saturday marks the first official competition for the Patriots under the direction of new head coach Joseph Richards. The season will be a transitional one for the Green & Gold, as Mason graduated five members of its 2018 Varsity 8+, which reached the A-10 grand final for the second-straight season.
 
Varsity 8+ members returning to Fairfax this season include juniors Nida Peleda and Maria Justiniano, as well as senior Elizabeth Rush and coxswain Kathleen Lackatos.
 
Mason also welcomes back a strong core from its 2018 Second Varsity 8+, including juniors Hannah Sawn, Chelsea Cluck, Emily Engdahl and Elizabeth Johnson, in addition to sophomores Leah Gillespie, Xander Huffman and Catelyn James. Coxswain Fabriana Velasquez also is back in action this season.
 
After Saturday's race, the Patriots return to the DMV to host the Head of the Occoquan on Nov. 3 in Fairfax Station.
