Giuliano Buzoianu got his final collegiate season off to a fantastic start this past weekend with a singles flight victory at the Joe Hunt Invitational.
Competing in the 'D' flight of the event, Buzoianu went a perfect 4-0 during the three-day competition on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy. The Bucharest, Romania, product did not lose a set over the course of his matches.
Buzoianu opened his weekend with a straight sets win over St. Bonaventure's Mark Rivolo (7-5, 6-3). In the quarterfinals, he knocked off Christian Provenzano of Connecticut, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
Buzoianu marched on to the semifinals on Saturday, where he dispatched of George Washington's Lawrence Sciglitano easily (6-3, 6-1). Then in Sunday's final, Buzoianu upended Matt Ghering of Air Force, 6-3, 7-5.
Also in the 'D' bracket, sophomore
Ryan Charles posted a solid 3-1 mark en route to winning the consolation title. He dropped his opening match to Ghering (6-4, 6-3) but rebounded with three straight victories. Those included wins over Fairleigh Dickinson's Ryu Kozuki (7-5, 6-3), Navy's Cam Kirkpatrick (7-5, 7-5) and FDU's Ivan Solans (6-1, 6-4).
In the 'A' flight, Mason No. 1
Edward Ayers won a pair of matches over the course of the weekend. He claimed victory in his opener over Connecticut's Yili Zheng (7-5, 7-6 (7-4)). He also defeated Luke Sanderson of Air Force in straight sets (6-4, 6-2).

Jakob Nielsen in the 'A' flight of doubles and the duo earned two wins. On Friday, the partners dispatched of St. Bonaventure's Mark Rivolo and Lukas Malmberg, 6-2. They also knocked off FDU's Andris Gudins and Niclas Pietsch, 6-3.
In the 'E' flight of singles, freshman
Michael Pollatos won a pair of matches in his debut for the Green & Gold. They included victories over Jonni Heikkila of St. Bonaventure (6-4, 6-1) and David Weltz of Monmouth (2-6, 6-2, 10-8).
The Patriots head back to Annapolis in two weeks to continue their fall slate at the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational (Oct. 12-15).
