FINAL TEAM SCORES
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's and women's swimming and diving teams each recorded two wins on Saturday, defeating American University and Boston University, while falling to Army at the Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va.
The Mason women's team (5-5, 2-4 A-10) won six events on the day. The Patriots earned a 213-84 win over American and a 159-141 victory against Boston University but were edged by Army 152-148, with the outcome decided in the final event of the afternoon.
The Mason men's team (7-1, 4-0 A-10) won four events, recording a 252-39 win against American and a 170-128 victory over Boston University, while dropping a 174-121 decision to Army.
On the women's side, the combination of seniors
Amy Tansill and
Dorothy Reilly along with juniors
Marla Albanese and
Theresa Cotter won the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.70). The team of senior
Allison Barahona, junior
Sidney Owens, sophomore
Rachel Chalsma and freshman
Shannon Glesing finished fourth in the event (1:48.38).
Reilly was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.24), placed third in the 200-yard IM (2:11.79) and finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (57.82).
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Tansill swam to a first place finish (1:04.90), while Barahona placed third (1:06.08). Barahona won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.70) with Tansill finishing fourth (2:26.19).
Cotter won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.91) with sophomore
Hannah Ikenberry finishing fourth (2:07.09). Cotter finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (58.37). Ikenberry also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.50) and was fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:37.24).
Mason senior
Rachel Williams took the top spot on the podium in the 100-yard freestyle (53.30) with Chalsma posting a fourth place finish (54.02). Williams was fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.09), while junior
Christina McLemore finished seventh (1:59.20) and sophomore
Melissa Carroll placed eighth in the event (1:59.39).
The Patriots took three of the top six spots in the 50-yard freestyle, with Albanese second (24.13), Chalsma fifth (24.85) and Williams sixth (24.86).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Albanese, Chalsma, Williams and Glesing finished second (3:34.96).
On the boards, freshman
Marina Toone won the three-meter diving event with a score of 270.60 and finished fourth in the one-meter springboard event with a score of 234.95.
On the men's side, the combination of senior
Alec Morin, sophomores
Logan Eubanks and
Christopher Stankiewicz and freshman
Andres Alarcon took the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay (1:32.62).Â
Stankiewicz won the 100-yard breaststroke (56.90) and finished fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.05).
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, sophomore
Attila Kiss finished second (9:39.32) while senior
Steven Craig placed fourth in the event (9:48.81). Kiss also posted a fifth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.95).
Mason senior
Matthew Lynch finished second in both the 100-yard butterfly (50.07) and 200-yard butterfly (1:50.74).
The Patriots claimed three of the top five spots in the 200-yard IM, with freshman
Dylan Peck second (1:56.80), Lynch third (1:58.56) and junior
Nicholas Burton fifth (2:00.42).
Sophomore
Ryan Donnelly recorded a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.20) and placed third in the 100-yard backstroke (51.50). Freshman
Drake Moretz was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.21).
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshman
Bradley Downs, Morin, Stankiewicz and Moretz finished second (3:10.45).
Sophomore
Gerald Hodges, Jr. won both diving events. He posted a score of 313.65 in the one-meter springboard and a score of 338.80 in the three-meter event. Freshman
Aidan Jones was sixth in both the one-meter (236.05) and the three-meter events (240.65).
The Patriots are back in action with a pair of road dual meets next weekend. Mason takes on Liberty on Friday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. and Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
