FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason redshirt senior
Ibrahim Bunduka has been named Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week, the organization announced.
Bunduka, an Alexandria, Va. native, improved to 17-7 on the season at 125 pounds after earning two wins over the weekend, including a victory over Rider's J.R. Wert, who entered the week ranked No. 20 nationally.
"The work that Ibrahim has been putting in is starting to show and it's great to see him get recognized for that," Mason head coach
Frank Beasley said. "He's really turned the corner and is wrestling well. He had a really solid win this weekend at Rider and a convincing win against Davidson. He's going to continue to build from here and we're excited for his upcoming matches."
Bunduka began the weekend with a 16-0 technical fall against Davidson freshman Michael McClelland on Friday, Jan. 12 at the Recreation Athletic Complex. Bunduka notched a takedown and 12 near fall points in the first period in the match.
In his second bout of the weekend, Bunduka scored a takedown with 25 seconds left in the third period to post a 4-3 decision over Wert on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, N.J.
Bunduka has won six straight dual matches to improve to 7-2 on the season, including a 2-0 mark against EWL opponents.
The Patriots are back in action with a pair of Eastern Wrestling League home duals next weekend, hosting Lock Haven on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 12 p.m. and Clarion on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Recreation Athletic Complex in Fairfax, Va.
