FAIRFAX, Va. – Behind solid debut performances from freshmen
Brianna Gibbs and
Hannah Yang, the George Mason University women's tennis team began its 2017-18 season this weekend at the Mary Washington Kickoff Classic.
The freshmen duo combined for a 4-0 record in singles and posted a 2-1 mark together in doubles to pace the Patriots in the opening event.
"This tournament is a great way to open our season," head coach
Stephen Curtis said. "There was some good competition and it provided a venue for our freshmen to work through their jitters and get some experience. We had to battle opponents and court temperatures over 129 degrees, so that certainly made things difficult, but I was happy with how our team fought through the conditions."
Yang notched a pair of wins in the 'A' singles flight, beginning with a three-set triumph over Mary Washington's Rachel Summers (4-6, 7-5, 10-4). She then defeated teammate
Sydney Green 8-6 to wrap up her singles play.
Gibbs entered the 'B' singles flight this weekend and began with a three-set win over Rachel Cooper of Mary Washington (2-6, 6-4, 10-4). She then took on Mary Washington's Hannah Kabusch and won the first set in a tiebreak. She then won the second set 7-5 to close out the match.
Gibbs and Yang also posted a pair of wins in doubles, including an 8-6 win over their Washington & Lee counterparts and an 8-6 victory over Mason's Green and freshman
Christine McCarthy.
Elsewhere for the Green & Gold, sophomore
Rachel Lee posted a 2-1 mark in B singles, including a two-set sweep (6-1, 6-1) of Mary Washington's Addie Hinton.
Sophomore
Sutherlyn Brinn also notched a 2-1 singles mark ('D' singles flight), while sophomore
Liz Lowe and freshman
Kayleigh Hahn combined to go 2-1 in doubles action.
Junior
Lauren Dupuis and freshman
Hannah Cianciola posted a perfect 3-0 doubles mark in the 'B' flight including wins over Mary Washington opponents of the 8-4 and 8-6 varieties.
