ALDIE, Va. – George Mason rising sophomore
Davis Soderberg's first Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship ended on Thursday.
Soderberg fell in the first round of match play 6 and 4 to Steve Serrao at Creighton Farms. He bowed out of the tournament after reaching match play thanks to tying for 16th with a 3-over 147 (73-74) two rounds of stroke play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Against Serrao, a 43-year-old who played collegiately at Virginia, Soderberg was all square through the first four holes. But he lost five of the six next holes to fall behind and couldn't recover as the match ended after 14 holes.
Still, it was a good tournament for Soderberg, a native of St. Charles, Mo., who moved to Charlottesville, Va., a year ago. Soderberg just completed his first season at Mason. He recorded a scoring average of 74.42 and finished in the top 20 at three tournaments. His top three finishes came in the first three tournaments of his career, tying for 12th at both the EKU Intercollegiate and Patriot Intercollegiate and taking 20th at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
He qualified for the VSGA Amateur Championship earlier this month by finishing third on June 6 at the Wintergreen Resort in Nellysford, Va., shooting a 74.
Scott Shingler, a former Mason golfer who graduated in 1995, won both of his matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday. Shingler finished second in stroke play after shooting 5-under 139 (67-72). He's no stranger to success on the VSGA circuit. He won the amateur championship in 2011 and is a three-time VSGA Men's Golfer of the Year.
