FAIRFAX, Va. – After a record-breaking season, George Mason's Eric Edwards has been named one of the best golfers in the state.

Edwards was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State University Division Men's Golf Second Team. It is the first such honor for Edwards, who just completed his junior season.

This award comes on the heels of being named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team on Thursday with teammate Brock Kovach. Edwards was also tabbed to the All-Conference Team after finishing 23rd at the conference championship in April.

The Salisbury, N.C., native set the single-season scoring record with a 71.70 average for the 2016-17 season. His mark topped Craig Mason's previous school record of 72.54 during the 2001-02 season. Edwards' three-year scoring average of 73.88 is second to only Craig Mason (73.14, 2000-04).

Edwards finished in the top 10 four times during the 2016-17 school year. Three times he finished in the top five, including his first collegiate victory at the Elon Phoenix Invitational in October. At the Atlantic 10 Championship, he placed 23rd with a 5-over 221 (69-78-74) and was the Patriots' top finisher at the 54-hole tournament.

He also shot par or less in 15 rounds, beating his own school record of 14 he set last year. His 96 birdies were also the most in one season in program history and his five eagles tied Mike Kirby (2005-06) for most in a season.
