SAN FRANCISCO – This week, George Mason's Ellis Messian is hitting the links and competing in one of the nation's oldest state amateur golf championships.

A rising senior for the Patriots golf team, Messian was one of just 156 players to qualify for the 106th California Amateur Championship. The San Diego native is currently competing in the tournament at The Olympic Club – the oldest athletic club in the country – in San Francisco.

The tournament, which began in 1912, stretches over the course of a week. Thirty-six hole stroke play began Monday and concludes on Tuesday. The low 32 golfers at the conclusion of stroke play advance to match play. The final match between the top two golfers is played over 36 holes.

Messian headed into Tuesday tied for 59th after shooting a 4-over par 75. He sunk birdies on holes No. 9 and 17 but carded four bogeys and a double bogey. Messian qualified for the California Amateur Championship as one of the top seven golfers at a qualifying tournament at Pauma Valley Country Club on May 23. He shot a 3-over 74 to tie for sixth.

Messian just concluded his junior season at Mason, finishing third on the team with a scoring average of 74.37. He carded his best finish of his career by tying for eighth with a 5-over 147 (74-73) at the Navy Spring Invitational in April. He led the team and helped the Patriots win their first team championship in more than four years.
