Tyler Zombro has been named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Zombro, an Integrative Studies major with a 3.98 GPA, is just the 10th Mason student-athlete to be named Academic All-America® since 1990. He is the second Mason baseball player to be selected, joining Chris Looze (2005).
Among the 33 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I baseball teams, Zombro is one of 19 who carry at least a 3.90 GPA and the only student-athlete from the Atlantic 10 Conference to earn the honor.
A native of Staunton, Va., Zombro is Mason's all-time leader in starts (55) and innings pitched (318.1). He ranks tied for second in wins (23), third in strikeouts (226) and is tied for seventh place on the Patriot's all-time list in appearances (62).
Zombro finished the 2017 season with a 6-5 record and a 2.78 ERA over 103.2 innings. During the regular season, the right-hander recorded five of his wins against conference opponents and led the Atlantic 10 in innings pitched (96.1) and tied for the most starts (14). Zombro finished the season with 76 strikeouts while walking only 16 batters and allowed just 22 extra-base hits.
A three-time Provost Scholar Athlete and two-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team, Zombro earned a win in six of his last 10 starts of the season including a victory in the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, tossing at least seven innings in eight times.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the only Academic All-America designation recognized by the NCAA. To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
