FAIRFAX, Va.
– George Mason University's softball team advances to Saturday's third day of the Atlantic 10 Championship, where it will face No. 3 Saint Joseph's for the fifth time in six days.
Mason's fantastic run continued Friday with a 4-0 shutout victory over No. 5 Saint Louis. The defeat was second of the day for the Billikens and ended their season with a 25-25 overall record.
Saturday's 3 p.m. game against the third-seeded Hawks will be Mason's third-straight elimination game. The Patriots, a sixth seed, are now only in the company of the top three seeds.
A win over the Saint Joseph's would move Mason to the semi-finals of the championship, where they would face No. 1 Fordham or No. 2 Massachusetts at 6 p.m. Saturday.
THE PARTICIPANTS
Mason faced all five remaining championship teams except No. 2 seed Massachusetts in the regular season. The Patriots won four games against the remaining A-10 title contenders, two of them at the George Mason Softball Complex.
Statistically, No. 5 Saint Louis is Mason's most fearsome opponent in the bunch after sweeping the Patriots in an extremely wet weekend a couple of weekends ago. On the other hand, Mason would go into a potential matchup against No. 4 Dayton with some momentum after sweeping the Flyers April 1 to win that series.
