Game Recap: Baseball |
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to George Washington, falling 4-1 in game one and 12-5 in the nightcap to the Colonials on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

Mason (22-27, 10-8 A-10) fell behind in game one in the third inning when George Washington (26-23, 10-8 A-10) rallied with two outs against starter Zach Mort.

After a double and a walk, George Washington senior Cody Bryant drove in two runs with a double to right field to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.

The Patriots answered in the home half of the third against Colonials starter Elliott Raimo.  Sophomore Brady Acker led off the inning with his first triple of the season, sending a drive all the way to the center field wall.  Junior Michael Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it a one-run game at 2-1.

The Colonials added to their lead in the fifth when senior Joey Bartosic stole home from third base to make the score 3-1.  George Washington added another insurance run in the sixth with a RBI single for a 4-1 advantage.

Mort (3-5) allowed four runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings and suffered the loss.  Senior Brock Hunter allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings in relief.  Raimo (6-3) allowed one run on six hits in the complete-game win.

Acker went 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple.  Mason didn't have more than one baserunner in any inning in the game.

In game two, the Colonials loaded the bases against Mason starter Brian Marconi in the first with a walk, a single and batter hit by a pitch.  Marconi worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground out.

The Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the first against Colonials starter Robbie Metz.  Acker swung at the first pitch and belted his fifth home run of the season, a solo homer over the left field fence to give Mason a 1-0 lead.

Acker walked to lead off the third inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by junior Trevor Kelly to make it a 2-0 game.

The Colonials took control of the contest in the top of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on eight hits to take an 8-2 advantage.  Freshman Nate Fassnacht hit a two-run home run and senior Cody Bryant drove in two runs with a single in the inning.

Mason junior Garett Driscoll hit a solo home run in the fourth to cut the George Washington lead to 8-3.  Freshman Logan Driscoll doubled in the fifth and raced across the plate when Kelly doubled to center field to make it an 8-4 game.

George Washington sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth to make it 12-4.  Fassnacht provided the big hit for the Colonials with a three-run home run to left field, his second round tripper of the game, as George Washington completed the three-game sweep.

The Patriots scored a run in the bottom of the ninth when Logan Driscoll drove in Jonathan Hansen from third with a sacrifice fly for the 12-5 final.

Marconi (5-5) allowed six runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings and took the loss.  Junior Ryan Ricci surrendered two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, junior Timothy Turner allowed four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.  Senior Tyler Kardas and freshman Jakob Ryan combined to toss three scoreless innings for the Patriots.

Acker went 1-for-2 with his fifth home run and scored two runs.  Kelly finished 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.  Garett Driscoll was 1-for-2 with his second home run of the season.

The Patriots are back on the diamond in non-conference action against James Madison on Tuesday at Spuhler Field with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
