FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's rowing program will culminate a season of progressive improvement at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championships this Saturday in Pennsauken, N.J.
The Mason Varsity 8+ boat is seeded eighth and will race in Heat 1 at 8 a.m. The Second Varsity 8+ is the No. 7 seed and will participate in Heat 2 at 8:30 a.m. The Varsity 4+ kicks off 8:40 a.m. (also the No. 8 seed).
"The A-10 is more competitive than it's ever been this season, especially in the Varsity 8," head coach
Ted Nagorsen said. "I think the margins between crews will be as close as they've ever been. A big goal for us is for our Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 to make the grand finals. For the Varsity 4, we want to close margins and keep improving."
Mason's Varsity 8+ has continued to shave seconds off its best time from race to race this season. At the April 23 Mason Invite, the Patriots trailed A-10 No. 1 seed George Washington by less than seven seconds in the A-10 heat, making up five seconds from the previous week's George Cup. The Patriots then finished their final in the Mason Invite at a solid 6:47.44.
The Patriots will race in their heat vs. No. 2 Rhode Island, No. 4 Fordham, No. 5 Saint Joseph's and No. 9 La Salle. The top-3 boats in the heat will advance to the grand final at 10:30 a.m., while boats 4-5 in each heat head to the petite final at 10:20 a.m.
The Second Varsity 8+ also has enjoyed gains throughout the regular season and is coming off a good performance at the Mason Invite. The Patriots bested Dayton by more than nine seconds and finished their final race in a solid 7:25.98.
Mason's Second Varsity 8+ will compete in its heat against No. 2 George Washington, No. 3 Fordham and No. 6 Duquesne. The top-3 boats advance to the grand final at 10:50 a.m. while the fourth boats in each heat head to the petite final at 10:40 a.m.
Mason's Varsity 4+ is competing against four other boats in its 8 a.m. heat. The Patriots will race top seed Rhode Island, No. 4 Fordham, No. 5 Saint Joseph's and No. 9 La Salle. The top three boats advance grand final at 11:10 a.m., while the remaining boats head to the petite final at 11 a.m.
