FAIRFAX, Va. – Five members of the George Mason University men's and women's track & field teams have been honored by the Atlantic 10 with All-Rookie honors.
Freshmen
Tyler Benson,
Colin Cannon and
Ethan Newland garnered the recognition on the men's side, while
Ashley Lewis and
Brittany Preston earned the award on the women's.
Benson, Cannon and Lewis also received All-Rookie accolades during the indoor season.
Benson (Warrenton, Va.) received the award for the 400-meter run, where he placed fifth at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship. Benson finished in 48.28 seconds to earn four points for the Patriots at the league meet. He also was part of the team's victorious 4x400 meter relay team, which crossed the finish line in 3:10.28. He set his PR of 47.94 seconds in the 400m during the A-10 preliminary race.
Cannon's recognition comes in the 800-meter run, where he placed seventh at the A-10 Championship in 1:54.56. He also helped the Patriots claim victory in the 4x800m relay with a cumulative time of 7:30.08. Cannon (Denver, Colo.) ran his 800m PR of 1:53.02 in the preliminary round of the event at the league meet.
Lewis (Boston, Mass.) made an impressive impact in her first season with the Green & Gold, winning the 800-meter crown at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship with a career best time of 2:07.67. She advanced to the NCAA Preliminary in her inaugural season and placed a solid 27
th out of 48 runners while posting the eighth-best time by a freshman.
Newland (Ashburn, Va.) put forth a great freshman campaign in distance action while earning his All-Rookie accolades in the 10000-meter run. He placed 14
th overall at the A-10 Championship in the event in a time of 31:53.11 and improved upon that time by a significant margin at the ECAC/IC4A Championship (31:26.19). His best time came at the 2017 Colonial Relays.
Preston received her accolade in the 100-meter hurdles, where posted a personal-best time of 14.52 seconds during the Michael Johnson Invitational in April. She posted sub-50 second times on four occasions during the season.
