FAIRFAX, Va. – One of the best performances of his career on one of the grandest stages didn't go unnoticed for
Steven Flynn.
The George Mason senior was named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Men's Performer of the Week on Tuesday. Flynn finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run last Thursday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia with a season-best time of 13:57.79.
It was the second-fastest time of his career and it was just two seconds off his school-record time of 13:55.26 he set last year. The time currently puts him at 17th on the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying list. The top 48 from each region qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary, which will be held May 25-27 in Lexington, Ky.
"He executed really well," George Mason head coach
Andrew Gerard said. "He was really pretty controlled through the middle part of the race. He positioned himself, made some good decisions, positioned himself well and was right there with 600 meters to go… That is his second-best time and was probably more controlled than when he ran the school-record 13:55. Within a second of that, so, yeah, we're very pleased with where he is right now."
Flynn and the Patriots are back in action this weekend for the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Amherst, Mass.
