FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University rowing junior
Nicole Van Oort has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
It marks the first time in Mason program history a rower has earned the honor, which recognizes combined achievement in both academics and athletics.
As a member of the District 3 Team, Van Oort now joins a pool of 80 student-athletes from the nation's eight total districts on the Academic All-America ballot. The first-, second- and third-team All-America selections will be announced in early June.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the only Academic All-America designation recognized by the NCAA. Rowing is part of the At-Large category, which includes beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis, water polo.
A two-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and three-time George Mason Provost Scholar, Van Oort carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in mathematics.
She has served as the important stroke position in Mason's Second Varsity 8+ Boat in 2016-17, leading Mason to a second place finish at the Occoquan Sprints and a top-20 finish at the Head of the Charles. She led the Patriots to a second place showing in the A-10 portion of the Mason Invite in April and has helped the Patriots win the Atlantic 10 Petite Final in both 2016 and 2017.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
