FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University men's tennis team put together a complete effort during a 6-1 victory over visiting Loyola (Md.) on Saturday inside the Mason Tennis Complex.
The Patriots dominated the doubles point, then cruised in singles to pick up the program's 10
th win of the season.
"We came out fired up in the doubles and kept the momentum going through the match," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "The guys are starting to believe they have the ability to get to another level and I'm very happy with the drive and motivation we continue to show. We'll use this full week of practice to hone in on our improvements and get ready for Friday."
Mason's first doubles tandem of
Pally Ray and
Daniel Gutierrez made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-1 to get the Patriots off to a great start.
Eddie Ayers and
Andrew Curtis won their third-consecutive doubles match at No. 3 (6-3) to clinch the point and the No. 2 duo of
Jakob Nielsen and
James Lange won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6) to ensure the sweep.
Nielsen increased the Patriot lead to 2-0 with a straight sets win at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3). The talented freshman is now 8-5 at the No. 3 spot this year.
Loyola won at No. 1 to move within one (2-1), but the Patriots swept the remaining singles matches from there.
Ray won in straight sets at No. 2 (6-2, 6-2), then Ayers easily took down Loyola's Taylor Blessing at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.
Giuliano Buzoianu won his second straight start at No. 6 (6-2, 6-4) and Curtis grabbed Mason's sixth point with a straight sets victory at No. 5 (6-3, 7-5).
The Patriots return to action Friday with a 1:30 p.m. home match vs. Delaware.
