FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's tennis freshman
Jakob Nielsen has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
It marks the first time in Nielsen's career that he's won the award.
Nielsen went 2-0 on Saturday and played a critical role in Mason's A-10 sweep of Fordham. In doubles, Nielsen teamed with
James Lange at No. 2 to grab a 6-2 victory and help the Patriots sweep the doubles point.
In singles, the freshman made quick work of his Fordham opponent at No. 3, winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to ensure he secured two of the Patriots' four points on the day.
On the year, the Mississauga, Ontario, native has put together a 10-5 record at No. 3 singles and has become an impactful player as a freshman for the Green & Gold.
Nielsen and the Patriots open the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 8 seed and will battle No. 8 Duquesne on Thursday (April 27) at 9 a.m. in Orlando, Fla.
