FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to St. Bonaventure, falling 2-1 in game one and 7-4 in the nightcap on Friday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (17-23, 5-5 A-10) fell behind in game one when the Bonnies scored a run in the top of the first inning with a RBI single against starter
Tyler Zombro to take a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots responded in the home half of the first. Junior
Michael Smith led off with his 10th double of the season and went to third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Sophomore
Brady Acker then singled up the middle, with Smith coasting across the plate to tie the game 1-1. Smith leads the Atlantic 10 in runs scored.
Zombro retired 12 of the next 14 batters he faced after allowing back-to-back singles in the first. The Mason defense was once again solid behind Zombro, turning two double plays in the game. The Patriots have turned nine double plays in Zombro's last five starts.
St. Bonaventure (18-14, 9-5 A-10) scored the eventual winning run in the top of the sixth when junior Ryan MacCarrick doubled down the left field line with one out and after advancing to third, scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Bonnies in front 2-1.
Acker went 2-for-3 with a walk and drove in a run. Smith finished 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the lone run of the game for Mason. Freshman
Logan Driscoll was 1-for-3 with a walk, while junior
Tyler Nelin was 1-for-4.
Zombro (4-4) allowed two runs on six hits in 9.0 innings and struck out three in the complete-game loss. Bonnies junior Aaron Phillips (6-0) also tossed a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with a career-high nine strikeouts. Phillips also went 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in both runs for the Bonnies.
The Patriots fell behind in the second game, when freshman Ben MacDonald drove in two runs with a two-out single against starter
Zach Mort in the top of the second to give the Bonnies a 2-0 advantage.
MacCarrick extended the Bonnies lead with a leadoff solo home run in the third to make the score 3-0.
Mason sent nine batters to the plate and scored three runs on four hits in the home half of the sixth to tie the score.
Driscoll led off the inning with his third round tripper of the season, a solo shot to right field to cut the St. Bonaventure lead to 3-1. After a single by Nelin, sophomore
Tim Quinn evened the score with one swing of the bat when he belted his first collegiate home run, a two-run blast over the right field fence to tie the game 3-3.
The Patriots took their first lead of the day in the seventh. Driscoll began the inning with a double into the right field corner and Nelin followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners with no outs. With one out, junior
Trevor Kelly knocked in a run, with Driscoll easily scoring from third to put Mason up 4-3.
The Bonnies rallied in the top of the ninth against four Mason pitchers, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs on five hits for the 7-4 final. Senior T. J. Baker had the big hit in the inning when he connected for a two-run home run with the Bonnies down a run.
Quinn went 1-for-5 with his first NCAA home run. Driscoll finished 3-for-5 with a single, double and a home run. He drove in a run and scored two runs. Nelin was 3-for-5 with three singles and scored a run. Freshman
John Callahan went 2-for-3 in the game.
St. Bonaventure scored seven runs on 14 hits, while the Patriots scored four runs on 11 hits in the contest.
Mort allowed four runs on 10 hits in 8.0 innings in the no decision. He struck out five and walked just one batter. Freshman
Jared DiCesare (2-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in the ninth.
Mason and St. Bonaventure wrap up the series on Saturday at Spuhler Field with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
