PHILADELPHIA – The George Mason University men's tennis team began its Philadelphia swing in style with a 7-0 victory over La Salle on Saturday inside the school's Tennis Complex.
With the victory, Mason improves to 9-7 (2-0 A-10).
"The guys came out right where we left off with great energy, and the movement in doubles is starting to show some improvements," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "Each match we play, we're learning new things to work on and how to get tougher on pressure points. I've been very happy with the guys' focus and determination to make improvements. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into our match with Saint Joseph's tomorrow."
Mason came out with a purpose in the doubles point and took all six matches.
Daniel Gutierrez and
Pally Ray won 6-4 at No. 1, Jimmy Lange and
Jakob Nielsen took the No. 2 match, 6-1, and the tandem of
Andrew Curtis and
Edward Ayers won the No. 3 contest, 6-3.
In singles, Nielsen cruised at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0) to build the Patriots a 2-0 lead. Lange soon followed with a straight sets win (7-5, 6-0) at No. 1.
Pally Ray clinched the match for the Green & Gold with a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 2 singles.
After those matches were complete, the No. 4-No. 6 singles matches were decided in 8-game prosets.
Ayers won 9-7 at No. 4, Gutierrez won 8-1 at No. 5, and Curtis grabbed a 8-3 win at No. 6.
The Patriots are right back at it Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest against Saint Joseph's.
