FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its series against Georgetown, with the Hoyas defeating the Patriots 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field to take two of the three games in the series.
Mason (10-17, 2-1 A-10) starter
Zach Mort retired the first nine batters he faced in the game, while Georgetown (16-12, 0-0 Big East) starter Kevin Superko didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning.
The Hoyas took the lead in the top of the fourth with three straight hits. Junior Jake Bernstein led off with a double and classmate Michael DeRenzi singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Zach Racusin then drove in the first run of the game with a single through the left side, with Bernstein scoring on the play to put Georgetown in front 1-0.
The Hoyas scored the first run in all three games in the series.
The Patriots threatened in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, sophomore
Ryan Tassone collected the first hit of the game for Mason when he tripled off the top of the left field fence, just missing a home run. Superko recorded a pop out to end the inning as the Hoyas maintained the one-run lead.
Georgetown added to the advantage in the top of the sixth. Bernstein led off with a single and with one out, Racusin reached on an error. Senior Jake Kuzbel drove in a run with an infield single to make the score 2-0 and junior Sammy Stevens delivered with a RBI double to increase the lead to 3-0.
After the Hoyas added a single run in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 4-0, Mason rallied in the home half of the inning.
Junior
Tyler Nelin singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Junior
Trevor Kelly then doubled to left field, with Nelin scoring to cut the Hoyas lead to 4-1.
With two outs in the ninth, Tassone singled to left-center, with Kelly rumbling around from second to make it a 4-2 game and bring the tying run to the plate, but that's as close as Mason would get.
Mort (1-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits over 7.0 innings in his fifth start of the season. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter. Junior
Timothy Turner pitched one scoreless inning, freshman
Jared DiCesare allowed an unearned run in the ninth and senior
Ryan Galvin finished the ninth.
Tassone went 2-for-4 with his first triple of the season and drove in a run. Kelly was 1-for-4 with a RBI and scored a run. Nelin finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.
The Patriots had at least one baserunner in every inning with a walk in each of the first four innings, and seven hits over the last five.
Mason hosts Towson on Tuesday at Spuhler Field with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
