William Walton Invitational Results
Split up in two states, the George Mason men's and women's track and field teams represented on large and small stages on Saturday.
The Patriots sent primarily jumpers and sprinters to the Gamecock Invitational, which featured 30 schools, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Mason also competed in the throws, jumps, sprints and distance events at the William Walton Invitational, a much smaller meet at nearby James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.
Junior
Raeshawn Bishop paced the Patriot contingency at the Gamecock Invitational, which welcomed SEC (Georgia, South Carolina), ACC (Clemson, North Carolina State) and Big Ten (Illinois) schools. Bishop finished third in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 14.91 meters (48 feet, 11 inches). He also placed seventh in the long jump with a mark of 6.96 meters (22 feet, 10 inches).
The 4x400-meter relay team posted the highest Mason finish at the meet, taking second with a time of 3:10.29 behind only SEC power Georgia (3:08.50). The women's 4x400 squad finished third in 3:44.25. The women's 4x100 team also took third with a time of 46.14. The men's 4x100 was fourth in 40.06.
Sophomore
Sarah Moore sprinted to a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 53.96. In the men's 200, senior
Bernard Freeman also set a personal best, running 21.01 for fifth place.
Junior
Sommer Sharpe ran a season-best time of 1:01.25 to take sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior
Ayo Raymond (100, 10.53) and junior
Xavier King Jr. (400, 47.62) both finished eighth in their races.
At the William Walton Invitational at James Madison,
Michelle Wallerstedt once again asserted her dominance in the discus. The redshirt senior finished first in the discus for the fifth time this season (in as many competitions) with a toss of 51.32 meters (168 feet, 4 inches). She also took sixth in the hammer throw with a heave of 44.60 meters (146 feet, 4 inches).
Junior
Shelby Garnand won the pole vault for the second time this season with a mark of 3.65 meters (11 feet, 11 ¾ inches). Junior
Ashley Hinton was second with a jump of 3.35 meters.
In all, the Patriots finished first 12 events (men's and women's) at the meet, which featured just four schools on the women's side (JMU, Marshall, VCU and Mason) and only three for the men (Mason, VCU and Marshall). At a meet that had as few as just one participant in some events, the men took first with 129 points while the women finished third with 44.
