FAIRFAX, Va. – Two of the best games of her young college career garnered recognition for
Melissa Semkiw.
The George Mason freshman was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Conference Co-Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Semkiw made 24 saves in a pair of road wins last weekend for the Patriots.
A 5-foot-7 goalkeeper from Frederick, Md., Semkiw made consecutive starts against Duquesne and VCU. In a 17-9 victory against the Dukes on Friday, she stopped 12 of 28 shots faced and allowed just nine goals. Against the Rams on Sunday, she again made 12 saves (on 22 shots faced) and surrendered only seven goals in 56-plus minutes.
For the season, a former US Lacrosse High School All-American at Oakdale High School, has made 46 saves. She has posted a 4-0 record in nine games and five starts. She ranks second in the A-10 in save percentage (.548) and fourth in goals against average (8.57).
The Patriots return to the field at 6 p.m. on Thursday when they host Revolutionary Rival George Washington at George Mason Stadium.
