FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team rallied to score two runs in the ninth to tie Radford, but fell to the Highlanders 9-4 in 10 innings on Tuesday in the first of a two-game series at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Radford (3-9) scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings against Mason (4-8) starter
Bryce Nightengale to take a 3-0 lead in the game.
The Patriots got on the board in the fifth inning against Radford reliever Colin Reid. A leadoff double by sophomore
Alejandro Aponte and a walk by junior
Frank Sturek put runners at first and second with no outs. After junior
Michael Smith advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Aponte scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.
Radford increased the lead in the sixth, using back-to-back doubles to plate another run for a 4-1 advantage.
Mason answered in the home half of the inning when junior
Tyler Nelin led off with his fourth double of the season and scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate
Trevor Kelly to cut the Radford lead to 4-2.
Sturek began the Mason rally in the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle and Smith followed with a walk to put the tying runs on base with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by junior

Logan Driscoll lined a single to center, with Sturek and Smith racing home to tie the game 4-4.
With both teams playing extra innings for the first time this season, Radford sent 11 batters to the plate in the 10th and scored five runs on four hits for the 9-4 final.
Nightengale (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits over 4.0 innings in his first start of the season. Freshman
Jared DiCesare (1-1) surrendered four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings and suffered the loss. Mason used seven pitchers in the game. Radford starter Brandon Donovan allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings for the Highlanders in the no decision.
Logan Driscoll drove in two runs and is tied for the team lead with 12 RBI. Nelin went 2-for-5 and scored a run and Kelly drove in his fourth run of the season. Aponte finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and Sturek was 1-for-3 and scored a run. Four of Mason's seven hits in the game were doubles.
The final game of the two-game set is Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
