Patriots Welcome No. 20 Virginia Tech for Home Opener on Wednesday

FAIRFAX, Va. – After starting the season on the road over the first three weeks, the George Mason women's lacrosse team will finally getting a chance to play in front of the home crowd.

And a ranked team will be waiting.

The Patriots welcome No. 20 Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at George Mason Stadium in their home opener. Admission is free. Mason (1-1) split its first two games, both coming on the road with a season-opening 9-7 win at William & Mary on Feb. 18 and a 11-6 loss to Georgetown last Saturday.

The Hokies (7-2) jumped into the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll at No. 20 on Monday after knocking off No. 9 Duke 11-6 on the road on Saturday. It was their second win over a top 20 opponent this season as they defeated No. 17 Boston College last month.

Virginia Tech has won five of six and off to a 2-0 start in ACC play. Junior Tristan McGinley is tied for the third-most goals in the country with 28. John Sung is in his first year as head coach after spending five years at Winthrop, where the Eagles twice reached the NCAA Tournament.

Mason is 10-5 all-time against Virginia Tech, with the Hokies winning the most recent meeting 15-7 on Feb. 25, 2011.

The Patriots are led by junior Melissa Lobaccaro, who has a team-high four goals, six draw controls and two assists. Seniors Brooke Lorber and Jordan Sdanowich have each scored three goals. Junior Hannah Warpinski has a team-high tying two assists and leads the team with 11 caused turnovers and nine ground balls.
